London school regrets honoring Dalai Lama

(China Daily July 8, 2008)--Britain's London Metropolitan University recently apologized for bestowing an honorary doctorate to the Dalai Lama after the move drew intense criticism from a number of Chinese.

Mexican drug violence claims 24 lives in 24 hours

<p>May 3 (CNN) -- Drug violence in the Mexican state of Chihuahua left 24 people dead in the span of 24 hours this weekend,polo Ralph Lauren, the state attorney general's office said Sunday.

The killings were scattered over four locations throughout the state, with eight dead in Juarez, 10 killed in the capital of Chihuahua, five killed in Cuauhtemuc and one killed in Parral.

All the slayings occurred in public places, with the killings in Cuauhtemuc occurring in a bar, said Carlos Gonzalez, a spokesman for the Chihuahua state attorney general.

The killings took place between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, Gonzalez said.

The victims -- all male -- ranged in age between 18 and 25 years old.

HAITI Universities Feel Strain After Earthquake

<p>PORT-AU-PRINCE, Feb 1, 2010 (IPS) - Astride Auguste was late for an exam at Quiskeya University on that fateful Tuesday, Jan. 12, when the earthquake - or "the event", as Haitians have come to call it - struck this capital city.

Auguste, an undergraduate student in international affairs and management, was near the campus when she felt the earth shake beneath her. She bounced a few times and eventually regained her composure. A few miles away, many of her fellow students had died after most of the buildings collapsed.

"I can't believe it," said a visibly shaken Auguste, days after the disaster. "This is a nightmare. The year has been lost. I don't know what I am going to do now."

For Auguste and thousands of university students across this city, attending college was a big part of their dreams for a better life. In less than 45 seconds, their world literally turned upside down.

As the Haitian government and international community scramble to shelter and feed the homeless and the injured, higher education appears to be on the sidelines for now.

Quiskeya and scores of universities and colleges in the capital were destroyed during the earthquake. But none was affected more than that school, which had recently undergone a two-million-dollar physical upgrade.

The State University of Haiti enrolls a mere fraction of high school graduates. The system at one time was considered among the best in the Caribbean. It graduated a coterie of doctors, lawyers,louboutin pas cher, accountants and engineers.

But in recent years, amid political turmoil,louboutin, the system has been lagging and private universities have mushroomed around the capital to serve students who can't gain admission into the public colleges and professional schools.

"Higher education is one of the best investments Haiti can make right now – there is no greater bang for the buck for developing a country. Haiti needs to rebuild its educated class, the anchor of every stable economy and society," said Conor Bohan, who runs a programme that provides merit-based scholarships for disadvantaged high school graduates.

Until 1986, the state university, founded at the turn of the century, was the only university licensed to operate in Haiti, controlled by whatever dictator was in power.

The most reputable are members of the association of francophone universities (www.auf.org). With about 80 percent of university buildings destroyed, the government held a meeting last week to plan a reconstruction strategy. Some of the ideas thrown around are prefab housing that can be put up in less than a week.

The Haitian Education and Leadership Programme, or HELP, a local university scholarship programme, is trying to use this opportunity to create partnerships between accredited Haitian universities and universities abroad, according to Bohan,hristian louboutin chaussures, its executive director and founder.

VOA News October 13,hristian louboutin chaussures, 2011 - The United States is promising to increase pressure on Iran following an alleged plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington.

In prepared testimony Thursday,chaussure louboutin, Treasury Undersecretary David Cohen said the U.S. will continue to develop what he called "new and innovative ways" to crack down on Iran and its central bank,Michael Kors Handbags, including possible new sanctions. In his statement to the Senate banking committee,michael kors outlet, he said such moves would "impose additional costs" on Iran and give Washington more leverage in dealing with Tehran.

The U.S. Treasury Department has already announced economic sanctions against Arbabsiar and Shakuri, as well as three officers of Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

The United States has previously imposed sanctions on Iran for its nuclear enrichment activities and refusal to cooperate with the United Nations' nuclear watchdog agency.

Cohen said those sanctions are already paying off and that Iran is now facing "unprecedented levels of financial and commercial isolation." He said the existing sanctions are making it harder for Iran to attract investors,Ralph Lauren, causing projected losses of $14 billion a year in oil revenues through 2016.

Iran maintains its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

SHANGHAI, 12 May (AFP) - China said on Saturday it would cut reserves for banks,louboutin, as the country seeks to engineer a soft landing for the world's second largest economy following disappointing data released on Friday.

The People's Bank of China, the central bank, said it would cut banks' reserve requirements by 0.50 percentage points effective from May 18,Michael Kors Handbags, according to a statement posted on its website.

The move was widely expected after China reported growth in industrial production slumped to a three-year low of 9.3 per cent in April,Cheap Michael Kors, adding pressure on Beijing to ease monetary policy.
