London school regrets honoring Dalai Lama

(China Daily July 8, 2008)--Britain's London Metropolitan University recently apologized for bestowing an honorary doctorate to the Dalai Lama after the move drew intense criticism from a number of Chinese.

Mexican drug violence claims 24 lives in 24 hours

<p>May 3 (CNN) -- Drug violence in the Mexican state of Chihuahua left 24 people dead in the span of 24 hours this weekend,polo Ralph Lauren, the state attorney general's office said Sunday.

The killings were scattered over four locations throughout the state, with eight dead in Juarez, 10 killed in the capital of Chihuahua, five killed in Cuauhtemuc and one killed in Parral.

All the slayings occurred in public places, with the killings in Cuauhtemuc occurring in a bar, said Carlos Gonzalez, a spokesman for the Chihuahua state attorney general.

The killings took place between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, Gonzalez said.

The victims -- all male -- ranged in age between 18 and 25 years old.

HAITI Universities Feel Strain After Earthquake

<p>PORT-AU-PRINCE, Feb 1, 2010 (IPS) - Astride Auguste was late for an exam at Quiskeya University on that fateful Tuesday, Jan. 12, when the earthquake - or "the event", as Haitians have come to call it - struck this capital city.

Auguste, an undergraduate student in international affairs and management, was near the campus when she felt the earth shake beneath her. She bounced a few times and eventually regained her composure. A few miles away, many of her fellow students had died after most of the buildings collapsed.

"I can't believe it," said a visibly shaken Auguste, days after the disaster. "This is a nightmare. The year has been lost. I don't know what I am going to do now."

For Auguste and thousands of university students across this city, attending college was a big part of their dreams for a better life. In less than 45 seconds, their world literally turned upside down.

As the Haitian government and international community scramble to shelter and feed the homeless and the injured, higher education appears to be on the sidelines for now.

Quiskeya and scores of universities and colleges in the capital were destroyed during the earthquake. But none was affected more than that school, which had recently undergone a two-million-dollar physical upgrade.

The State University of Haiti enrolls a mere fraction of high school graduates. The system at one time was considered among the best in the Caribbean. It graduated a coterie of doctors, lawyers,louboutin pas cher, accountants and engineers.

But in recent years, amid political turmoil,louboutin, the system has been lagging and private universities have mushroomed around the capital to serve students who can't gain admission into the public colleges and professional schools.

"Higher education is one of the best investments Haiti can make right now – there is no greater bang for the buck for developing a country. Haiti needs to rebuild its educated class, the anchor of every stable economy and society," said Conor Bohan, who runs a programme that provides merit-based scholarships for disadvantaged high school graduates.

Until 1986, the state university, founded at the turn of the century, was the only university licensed to operate in Haiti, controlled by whatever dictator was in power.

The most reputable are members of the association of francophone universities (www.auf.org). With about 80 percent of university buildings destroyed, the government held a meeting last week to plan a reconstruction strategy. Some of the ideas thrown around are prefab housing that can be put up in less than a week.

The Haitian Education and Leadership Programme, or HELP, a local university scholarship programme, is trying to use this opportunity to create partnerships between accredited Haitian universities and universities abroad, according to Bohan,hristian louboutin chaussures, its executive director and founder.

André de Nesnera 29 December 2010 - One of the central foreign policy questions facing the Obama administration is how to persuade Iran to end its uranium enrichment program.

The United States and the European Union have for years believed that Iran's uranium enrichment program is designed to produce a nuclear weapon. Iran has said its program is meant only for peaceful purposes,Cheap Michael Kors, such as generating electricity.

In an effort to persuade Iran to end its nuclear program,Ralph Lauren, the United Nations Security Council has passed four sets of resolutions imposing sanctions on Tehran. Retired U.S. Marine Corps General Anthony Zinni says sanctions can be a double-edged sword. "We have to be sure that any sanction doesn't end up just hurting the people more than the regime," he said. "They are blunt instruments, in many cases, and you're trying to target the regime but it ends up falling down onto the people."

However former U.S. Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger [1992, George H.W. Bush administration] says the international community must put more pressure on Iran.

"The international community can first of all do a great deal more than it is doing," he said. 'Military intervention'

General Zinni agrees that all options should remain on the table. But he also warns that military intervention against Iran could have dire consequences.

"If we end up with a conflict - there are strikes and counterstrikes in the region - it is going to affect the access to important energy resources; it will affect the economy of the world; it could stir up reaction in the Islamic world if it is perceived as being a pre-emptive attack, not being warranted - however that propaganda may play that," he said.

"The ability of the Iranians to fire missiles from mobile sites, put mines in the Strait of Hormuz, activate sleeper cells, terrorist cells - I mean this thing could escalate to the point where we have a major conflict and right at the heart of the energy resources that the world's economy depends on," he added.

Zinni and like-minded analysts say the international community must find a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear ambitions in order to avoid a potential military strike with dire consequences for everyone concerned.

North Korea torpedoed South's navy ship report

SEOUL,Ralph Lauren, Apr 22 (Reuters) - South Korea's military believes a torpedo fired from a North Korean submarine sank its navy ship last month, based on intelligence gathered jointly with the United States, a news report said on Thursday.

The Yonhap news report appears to be the clearest sign yet that Seoul blames Pyongyang for what would be one of the deadliest incidents between the rivals since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. It puts more political pressure on President Lee Myung-bak, but analysts do not see it triggering a war.

The military's intelligence arm sent the report of "certain" North Korean involvement to the presidential Blue House soon after the incident, Yonhap quoted a high-ranking military source as saying.

Lee's government has come under criticism for what many see as its overly cautious handling of possible links to North Korea. It has called for a thorough investigation of the sinking,Ralph Lauren Polo Match, thought to have killed 46 sailors.

Nearly a third of students responding to a 2010 national survey of first-year college students reported they were overwhelmed by the heavy workload in their last year of high school.

Deborah Stipek, dean of the Stanford University School of Education, is an expert in what motivates students to learn and says they are stressed. And for good reason.
